Hello
Welcome to my classroom! My name is Mrs. Donaldson, and I am ecstatic to be your visual arts teacher this year at Cherry Creek High School. With a passion for education and a dedication to fostering a supportive and engaging learning environment, I am committed to helping each student reach their full potential.
Educational & Working Background
I hold a Bachelor of Fine Arts from The University of Colorado Denver and I will have my Master of Arts, in instruction and curriculum from Adams State University by August 2025. I am a first year teacher. Throughout my career, I have had the pleasure of working with students of diverse backgrounds and abilities. During my time at DAVA (Downtown Aurora Visual Arts) I spent time with many minority and underprivileged students. I was able to help them develop more skills to grow as a visual artist. During the last three years, I spent time working with students ranging from 3-21 years old who are have Autism Spectrum Disorder, as well as other special needs. I found that experience very rewarding. When I started my masters program and began student teaching, It solidified my desire to teach. I look forward to having a great diversity of students in my future classes.
Teaching Philosophy
I hold the perspective of a student-centered approach to teaching. I believe it is important for peers to work together, with a mindset of active learning. I believe the purpose of education is to help form the next generation of leaders in our society and it's up to teachers and parents to ensure their kids are prepared and ready to face the world when that time comes. I believe that students learn best when they work with other students and seek input from other teachers and resources. I want my students to experience a variety of learning formats including Videos, images, games, group projects, and short lectures. I plan to float in the classroom and provide differentiated teaching to meet all the student's educational needs. I want the students to learn the skills that they need for the medium they are working with. But not so much that creativity is put on the back burner. I plan to have them focus on their curiosity, and creativity to help them advance in the course. I would care more about a creative adjustment to the student’s work, even if it has the student stray from the assignment guidelines. I want them to be able to problem-solve and figure out other ways of doing things, while still showing their understanding of the content.I plan to communicate clear expectations for, disrespect, disruption, or distraction in the classroom. I will also communicate the expectation of follow-through with deans/other admin. I want to encourage self-management skills and emotional/physical regulation. I plan to allow students to take a break or to step outside and chat so I can better support them. I want my students to feel free to voice their opinions, concerns, and suggestions in my class, without fear of repercussions. I plan to have a locked box in my classroom where students can leave notes to let me know what’s on their minds at any point in time throughout the school day. I also plan to implement many call-and-repeat activities in the class to help reset and re-engage students while transitioning to the next part of the class. Tables will have groups of students at them, I think students work better when they collaborate with their peers. I want my students to make authentic discoveries on their own. I believe this will lead to more meaningful connections that will ultimately encourage my students to see themselves as life-long learners. I believe some of my core values in the class will align with hospitality, communication, collaboration, consistency, reflection, and respect. I believe students have some level of intrinsic motivation. In the case that it has already been diminished or discouraged, I plan to make lectures and course content fun. I believe that having students learn in creative ways, eg. Games, Videos, Kahoot!, and Pictures, helps them to learn and retain knowledge better. I believe repetition is key to gaining a better understanding, and that practice makes perfect. Through this, I want to diversify the ways my students learn in lectures and instruction and have them put it to practice individually, in groups, and teach it to their peers. I plan to let the students choose some aspects of forming the class and have some freedom in making the class how they would like it to be, which encourages personal ownership. I want to encourage personal or cultural connection to the subject to help students relate to what they will be learning.
Beyond The Classroom
I married my husband Jacob in January 2022. He is a structural engineer for Cronin Engineering and Inspection. When I'm not teaching, I enjoy ceramics, photography, sci-fi books and movies, cooking, camping and fishing. I am also a christian, and I spend a lot of my free time with church friends outdoors. I believe that continuous learning and personal growth are vital to a successful life!
